Kingsway runs all-time S.J. #4 7:47 in Meet of Champions

This came out of nowhere.

It was overshadowed by the chaos at the end of the 43rd Meet of Champions, but Kingsway’s Tivo Rivera, Russell Bailey, Derrell Manhertz and Rondell Gilmore-Lane quietly turned in a monster 3,200-meter relay performance Thursday night.

The Dragons’ ran the fourth-fastest 4-by-8 time in South Jersey history and the second-fastest in the last quarter century, placing second to CBA, which won in 7:46.77.

Kingsway, whose distance runners are coached by former Delsea and Princeton runner Christian Lynch, went into the M-of-C as only the No. 7 seed with a 7:54.80 at the Haddonfield Invitational.

Kingsway’s time is No. 25 in the U.S. this year, which is remarkable considering until the Haddonfield meet, the Dragons hadn’t broken 8:13 all year, and Kingsway had never produced a sub-8 3,200 relay in school history.

So they broke 8:00 and 7:50 for the first time … on the same day.

Here’s a glance at the seven South Jersey 4-by-8 teams that have broken eight minutes outdoors:

7:40.99, Willingboro, 1983
7:44.25 , Willingboro, 2003
7:46.2y, Deptford, 1967
7:47.66, Kingsway, 2011
7:47.9, Willingboro, 1982
7:48.3, Woodbury, 1977
7:49.34, Cherokee, 2000
